Seahawks set to honor state champs, feast on Sharks

The Myrtle Beach football program will honor its six state championship teams at halftime tonight, while the current Seahawks try to get back on track for a seventh.

While the 1980, ’81, ’83, ’83, 2008 and 2010 teams are being honored during intermission, the Seahawks might already have their game against St. James wrapped up.

But this week is more than bout beating the Sharks; it’s about becoming the team that was expected to contend for the state championship before an upset at Conway and a rash of injuries intervened.

Dropped from No. 1 to No. 4 in the Class AAA poll, Myrtle Beach needs to get some players healthy and show that, when healthy, it can beat anyone in the state, as it did against Byrnes last month.

The lowly Sharks just happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time in this one. … Myrtle Beach 42, St. James 7.

* Conway at Lugoff-Elgin: The Tigers also are trying to get back on the winning track after last week’s upset loss to West Florence.

Conway should welcome back do-it-all quarterback Mykal Moody in the starting lineup after he missed most of last Friday’s game with a concussion.

The Tigers should be able to manhandle the Demons no matter who lines up at QB. … Conway 24, Lugoff-Elgin 13.

* Socastee Georgetown: This matchup highlights a team on the comeback trail vs. another one desperately seeking directions to it.

The Bulldogs are 6-1 and in the hunt for the region title while the Braves have lost five of their last six games, four of them by a touchdown or less.

Look for the Braves to keep this one close for a while but the Bulldogs pull away in the end. … Georgetown 27, Socastee 23.

* Wilson at North Myrtle Beach: Speaking of trying to get back on track, the Chiefs have lost their last 18 games in a row, an unfortunate school record.

The Chiefs have been closing the gap in recent games and have come close to tasting their first victory since 2009 before melting down with turnovers and other mistakes.

The Chiefs will challenge again in this one but will have to wait a week for their first victory when they play St. James next Friday. … Wilson 31, North Myrtle Beach 23.
