Seahawks roll past Chiefs to win battle of unbeatens

mbfoot-14runBoth teams came in with perfect 6-0 records, but one team was far from perfect in the showdown between No. 7 North Myrtle Beach and No. 2 Myrtle Beach on Friday night at a sold-out Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium.

The Chiefs (6-1 overall, 0-1 region) lost four fumbles and the Seahawks (7-0, 1-0) took full advantage to score a 43-23 victory over their visiting Region 7-4A rival. Myrtle Beach used several key special teams plays to take over the early driver’s seat to the region title.

Before the capacity crowd was fully seated, the Seahawks took control off the opening kickoff on a 93-yard touchdown return by Jermani Green. After a three-and-out on the Chiefs’ opening possession, the Seahawks broke through to block a punt into the end zone for a quick 9-0 lead that put the Chiefs on their heels.

Myrtle Beach’s star of the game, two-way player Keyonte Sessions, showed his speed and versatility with a 38-yard TD run out of the Seahawks’ Rhino package for a 16-0 lead. North Myrtle Beach finally got on the board in the second quarter on a 75-yard TD run and the Chiefs trailed 16-6 at halftime.

Myrtle Beach took control early in the second half after quarterback Lawson Cribb connected with Jaquan Chestnut for a 20-yard TD pass. On the ensuing possession, Sessions scored from the other side of the ball when he caught a bobbled pitch and bolted 42 yards to paydirt to make it 29-6 in the third period.

But the Chiefs responded by scoring 17 unanswered points to make it a game. T.J. Gore capped a nice drive with a 3-yard TD run, and Andrew Smith booted a 46-yard field goal early in the fourth. The Chiefs had a long TD pass called back on a questionable call, but Kered Class made it for it with a 3-yard TD to make it 29-23 with 8 minutes remaining.

That’s when Sessions took the game in his hands out of the Rhino package. He ran the ball at will against the Chiefs, capping the 5-minute drive with a 4-yard TD run. Following the Chiefs’ fourth lost fumble, Myrtle Beach’s Toronto King did the honors with a game-clinching 3-yard TD run in the final minute.

Myrtle Beach travels to St. James next week, while North Myrtle Beach gets a bye week to recover before facing Wilson.
