Seahawks, Tigers, Panthers face key region showdowns

Despite the loss of all-everything quarterback Everett Golson, the Seahawks have barely missed a beat with the rotating QB system featuring C.J. Cooper and Taylor Keane.

Ranked No. 2 in the Class AAA, Myrtle Beach has a solid chance to repeat as state champions and claim their third state title in four years.

But to continue their four-year streak of region crowns, the Seahawks have to get past Georgetown, which hasn’t been a contender for years.

The Bulldogs appear to have turned the corner this season, but they are not ready to hang with the Seahawks and their stone-wall defense.

This one won’t be as close as the game-of-the-week hype its is receiving in the traditional media. … Myrtle Beach 37, Georgetown 13.

* South Florence at Conway: This is a huge Region VIII-AAAA showdown for the Tigers, who need a win tonight to stay in the hunt for the title.

The Bruins are the lone undefeated team in region play at 2-0, while the Tigers are 1-1 and in position to claim a tie for first with the tiebreaker in their pockets.

Conway QB Mykel Moody is coming off a six-touchdown performance and will be the top target for the South Florence defense, but Moody stays hot and delievers a big home win. … Conway 27, South Florence 24.

* Carolina Forest at Sumter: The Panthers have proven they can hang with the elite of Region VIII-AAAA. Now it’s time to prove they can beat them.

Carolina Forest fell to South Florence on the road last week but had an extra day to prepare for the Gamecocks, who also are 1-1 in the region.

Quarterback Danny Daly and running back Harold Atkinson get it cranked back up again Friday night and celebrate with some fried Gamecock. … Carolina Forest 31, Sumter 24.

* North Myrtle Beach at St. James: The Chiefs are looking to snap their 20-game losing streak and this might be their last best chance before the cold spell stretches into another season.

But the 2-6 Sharks also are hungry for a victory and the Chiefs are a sign of relief after a difficult schedule in 2011. Look for this one to come down to the wire. … St. James 20, North Myrtle Beach 17.

* Socastee at Wilson: A season of heartbreak is winding down for the Braves, who have lost four games this season by a touchdown or less.

Wilson is the third party in contention for the Region VIII-AAA title and will need to win to stay in the hunt for at least a share of the crown.

Socastee’s spirits may be low after so many near-misses this season, but they give the Tigers all they can handle and more in another close call. … Wilson 24, Socastee 21.
