Sessions finds early success in new home with Bobcats

Myrtle Beach native and NBA journeyman Ramon Sessions is finding a happy home with his new team, the Charlotte Bobcats (4-3), who have won three consecutive games for the first time since March of 2011.

Sessions scored 18 points in Wednesday night’s win over the Minnesota Timberwolves – one of four former teams the fifth-year NBA veteran will face this season. But less than 12 hours later, Sessions was back in his hometown handing out assists in the form of free Thanksgiving turkeys to the needy as part of his foundation’s charity efforts.

The former Myrtle Beach Seahawk is playing a major role in the Bobcats’ turnaround from last year’s NBA-worst seven-win season. Coming off the bench behind Kemba Walker, Sessions’ role has been pivotal in recent wins.

In last Saturday’s 101-97 comeback overtime victory over Dallas, the Bobcats’ first-ever win over the Mavericks, Sessions made two big plays during crunch time to help the Bobcats overcome a 15-point deficit.

Sessions hit a driving layup with 2.8 seconds left in regulation that tied it 91-91 and forced overtime. His free throws with 6.3 seconds left in overtime that sealed the victory. Sessions had 12 points, four rebounds and three assists.

Sessions played an even bigger role in the Bobcats’ victory over the Washington Wizards on Monday, scoring a game-high 21 points. Then he chipped in 18 points in his triumphant return to Minnesota in an 89-87 victory.

In six games this season, Sessions is averaging 27 minutes of action per game, although he topped 30 minutes in the past two outings. His 16.3 points per game are third best on the team and he has begun to see time at shooting guard along side Walker.

Sessions played at Nevada before entering the NBA Draft as a junior and going in the second round to the Milwaukee Bucks. A series of trades and injuries conspired to slow his start in Cleveland and Minnesota.

Sessions was sent to the Los Angeles Lakers late last season and he started to show signs of the promise he brought into the league. He turned down an offer to return to the Lakers to join his home team in the Carolinas.

So far for Sessions, there appears to be no place like home.
