VIDEO: Sessions scores 23 on eve of MB homecoming

Untitled-2Former Myrtle Beach High standout and Charlotte Bobcats guard Ramon Sessions had a big night at home Monday before his big night back home on Tuesday.

Sessions, who will be honored at his alma mater Tuesday night’s game against St. James, scored 23 points and hit four free throws in the final 23.9 seconds to preserve a 100-95 victory over the Toronto Raptors.

Sessions saw significantly more playing time without injured point guard and leading scorer Kemba Walker, who is out for two weeks with a sprained left ankle. That means Sessions will have some time to show what he can do in the starting role.

Sessions had already seized on his increased role in Saturday night’s loss to the Miami Heat, when he made a highlight reel dunk over LeBron James. The video went viral (see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=17f-Qde9atQ), and the dunk made ESPN SportsCenter’s “Top Plays” segment.

On Tuesday night, Sessions will experience another highlight moment at a place where everyone has known his name for year when he returns to his alma mater to be honored by his hometown. He will be recognized at the St. James-Myrtle Beach showdown between the girls and boys game, about 7:30.

Sessions helped the Seahawks to a state title before playing his college ball at Nevada. He left as a junior and became a second-round draft pick of the Milwaukee Bucks. The seventh-year pro also has played for the Minnesota Timberwolves, Cleveland Cavaliers and Los Angeles Lakers before returning to the Carolinas with the Hornets.

Despite his journeyman career, Sessions has never lost touch with his hometown and longtime friends. He regularly returns to host basketball camps and golf tournaments, and to pass out Thanksgiving turkeys to his former neighbors in the Racepath community of Myrtle Beach. The city will honor him for his accomplishments and community involvement.

Saturday’s overtime loss to the Miami Heat may have been a turning point for Sessions in Charlotte, where he has served primarily as a backup. Starter Kemba Walker left the game with an ankle sprain, turning the starting role over to Sessions. He scored 16 points and will serve as the starter at least until Walker’s return.
