Myrtle Beach sweeps Chiefs

In a game with six lead changes and seven ties, Myrtle Beach pulled away near the end for a 61-50 Region VIII-AAA victory over North Myrtle Beach on Friday night.

Myrtle Beach, which suffered its first region loss in six years in its last outing, improves to 15-3 overall and 3-1 in Region play while the Lady Chiefs fall to 12-6 overall and 2-2 in the Region.

Trailing 28-21 at the half, North Myrtle Beach scored the first eight points of the third quarter to take a 29-28 lead with 5:51 on the clock.

The lead changed hands three times over the next four minutes before NMB’s Kendricka Bellamy regained the lead for the Lady Chiefs at 39-37 with a trey with 1:48 remaining in the third quarter.  The lead would prove to be the last for the Lady Chiefs as Myrtle Beach reeled off nine straight points.  The Seahawks went on to lead by as many as 12 points in the closing seconds.

Khadijah Sessions led Myrtle Beach with 33 points, 12 rebounds, a season-high nine assists, and seven steals.

North Myrtle Beach was paced by Taylor Allman’s 16 points and four steals.  Bellamy added 12 points for the Lady Chiefs, while Ja’Quella Livingston posted 11 points and nine rebounds.

* Boys: The Myrtle Beach boys used its depth and defense to blow out rival North Myrtle Beach 71-43 on Friday night.

The Seahawks (8-10 overall, 2-2 Region VIII-AAA) saw 11 of their 12 players score, registered 11 steals and forced 20 turnovers on the night. Myrtle Beach outscored the Chiefs (9-6, 1-3) by a 35-13 margin in bench scoring and 28-13 in points off turnovers.

Myrtle Beach built a 41-21 halftime lead and held the Chiefs at bay the rest of the way. That allowed the Seahawks to empty the bench in the second half and the reserves added to the lopsided victory.

Myrtle Beach starters Emaray Johnson and E.J. Goings led the way with 13 and 11 points respectively, and Solomon Cooper came off the sidelines to tally 10 points, including a pair of 3-pointers.

North Myrtle Beach got a game-high 10 rebounds and a team-high nine points from Rodrick Hemingway.

The Chiefs return to action Tuesday night against Socastee while the Seahawks travel to Georgetown.
