The battle for third place in the Region 7-3A standings came down to penalty kicks Monday night, with St. James taking a 3-2 victory over North Myrtle Beach.
After the match was knotted at 2-all at the end of regulation and two overtime periods, the Sharks (11-6-1 overall, 4-3 region) converted their first three kicks while goalkeeper Haywood Brandon made two stops and had another sail wide to clinch the round of PKs.
Playing at a neutral site at region rival Socastee, St. James freshman Conor Sloan netted both goals for the Sharks while North Myrtle Beach’s Christian Buis scored both goals for the Chiefs (6-7-1, 3-3), who can still make the playoffs as the No. 4 seed in Region 7-3A.
North Myrtle Beach goalkeeper Dallas Fields made 11 saves, but Brandon, who had six saves in regulation, came through in the clutch to lock up the No. 3 seed. The Sharks face Georgetown on Tuesday and the Chiefs take on No. 1 Myrtle Beach on Wednesday.
