St. James pins rival Braves, retains region championship

Already ranked No. 1 in the state in all of Class AAA, the St. James wrestling team backed up it accolades by successfully defending the Region VIII-AAA championship on Thursday.

The Sharks scored a 59-18 win over rival Socastee to finish undefeated in the region. They now turn their attention to bigger goals – a Class AAA state championship.

The Braves opened the dual meet with back-to-back pins by Justin Knipper and Dylan Martin for the early lead, but the Sharks responded with nine straight wins – six of them by pin – to run away with the win against their chief rivals.

St. James’ John Del Bianco (120), James Elliott (126), Jaime Bolduc (132), John VanSlooten (145), Derek Rothermel (152), De’Ante Salaam (171), Gregg Johnsen (182) and Weldon Brandon (195) claimed pins to clinch the victory.

Also winning for St. James were Codi Rothermel (138) with a 16-0 technical fall over Travis Lazaroff, Nick Juretic’s (160) 6-4 decision over Zachariah Heneidi; and Austin Brown’s 4-2 decision over Kyle Burton (Soc) 4-2.

Socastee’s Craig Burton (285) closed the meet with a pin of Jacob Boomer in just 44 seconds, but the Braves simply didn’t have enough fire power to hang with the Sharks.
