Golf: Sharks edge Braves; Chiefs top Panthers, Tigers

The St. James High girls golf team scored a dramatic one-shot victory over rival Socastee in Tuesday’s links version of the Battle of Highway 707.

Playing at Prestwick Country Club without defending state champion Smith Knaffle, the Lady Sharks got a strong outing from eighth-grader Adrian Anderson.

Anderson turned in a 2-over 38 to earn medalist honors and lead the Lady Sharks to victory with a team total of 177.

Senior teammate Jordan White was close behind with a 41, followed by Katie Smith (43), and Kelli Jones (55).

The Lady Braves were led by Lawson Devers with a 42. Alisa Berindea (44), Molly Teal (46) and Joey Kirkman (46) also had scores counting in the match.

The Lady Sharks finally have a break until Monday when they face Carolina Forest at River Oaks.

* North Myrtle Beach 194, Carolina Forest 195, Conway 196: The Lady Chiefs won a close tri-match at their home course of Eagles Nest Golf Club, edging the Lady Panthers by a single stroke and the Lady Tigers by only two shots.

North Myrtle Beach (194) used a solid team round, led by Brianna Joyner’s 41. Teammates Gabby Spoones (48), Kalynn Basehoars (50) and Lorena Villas (55) rounded out the Lady Chiefs’ foursome.

Carolina Forest was led by Mia Gray and Alayna Fortenberry, both with 1-over 37s, followed by Miracle Burgess (58). Rylie Hunter and Kayleigh Miller shot identical 63s.

Conway, which brought only three players due to illness, was led my medalist Taylor Reaves with a 1-under-par 35. She was followed by Logan Emrick (52) and Kiley Lewis (59), whose score counted twice to complete her team’s top-four rounds.

The Lady Chiefs return to action Wednesday to host Aynor and Cape Fear Academy from Wilmington, NC, at Eagles Nest with a 4:30 p.m. tee time.
