Sharks suffer another tough season opener against Loris

St. James’ football season started in heartbreak for the second straight year Friday night, with another hard-fought loss to Class 2A power Loris.

The visiting Lions scored 13 unanswered points in the second half to erase a double-digit halftime lead for the Sharks for a 13-10 win. Last year Loris stole a 9-8 victory in a game in which head coach Mark Fischer informed his team he had cancer before opening kickoff.

This time, with Fischer on the sidelines with a clean bill of health, the Sharks played an inspired first half before falling to the Lions. Cody Toomer recovered a fumble in the end zone for the Sharks’ lone touchdown and female kicker Nicole Myers booted her first career field goal from 39 yards out for a 10-0 halftime advantage.

But the Lions came roaring back in the second half and finally got on the scoreboard behind quarterback Bennett Winslow. Levi Moody scored the game-winning TD with a 22-yard TD late in the third quarter and the Loris defense , which returned all 11 starters, shut down the Sharks to secure the victory.
