Sharks track and field star Alston commits to Cougars

sjtf-alstonhurdlesSt. James High senior Alexus Alston is a jack of all trades for the Sharks’ track and field team. She hopes to be a master of one at the next level after verbally committing to The College of Charleston.

In addition to her variety of talents on the track, field and basketball court, Alston is graduating with a South Carolina Honors diploma with a 3.85 GPA, proving she is an all-around student-athlete. Her diverse resume drew interest from the Cougars and other major programs. She visited over the campus over the weekend and knew it was the right place for her.

“I absolutely loved the atmosphere being downtown and the personalized level of coaching I will receive at C of C,” Alston said. “All of the coaches’ personalities remind me a lot of my amazing coaches here at St. James and it makes me feel close to home. I feel that C of C will lead me in the right direction throughout my Division I college track and field experience.”

The only difficult decision for Alston might be between track or field. She holds school records in five different events and has competed in the state finals in four of them during her illustrious high school career. She finished second in the state in the 400 hurdles and fifth in the 100 hurdles – her primary events she hopes to focus on at C of C. She also placed seventh in the 100 meters and the triple jump.

“During college I plan to specialize in hurdles,” Alston said before amending her statement. “I may dabble a little with jumps and sprints, we will see where life takes me on that.”

With her college plans settled, now Alston can focus on bringing home a state title in at least one event in the spring. She is currently the top-ranked senior in Class 4A in the 400 hurdles and hopes to bring home more hardware in other events.
