Shootout by the Sea: NMB eyes sweep of own tourney

Call them rude hosts if you want, but the North Myrtle Beach boys and girls basketball teams are in position to run the tables in their own tournament.

The Lady Chiefs (9-0) faced one of their toughest opponents all season in South Florence but still managed to win by double digits, 46-35. They will face Goose Creek in the girls finals at 6 p.m. Saturday.

The Chiefs (6-2) followed with another thriller in the nightcap, defeating Nation Ford 58-56 to advance to Saturday night’s 7:30 p.m. championship game against Summerville. It was their second straight close call.

After rallying to defeat Forest Hills (NC) 52-48 in the tourney opener, the Chiefs needed some hot hands to get past Nation Ford. Jaquan Grissett, who scored 30 on Thursday night, came through again with 17 points.

But this time he was joined by Matt Lindsey with 17 points and twin brother Josh Lindsey with 13. The two broke out Friday after being held in check the opener, putting the Chiefs in contention for the big trophy.

The Lady Chiefs look to do the same after getting some offense from their inside players Friday night. Marci Chestnut scored 14 points and Ja’Quella Livingston had 11 and Taylor Allman tallied 10 in the winning effort.

In earlier girls action, Goose Creek defeated Scott County (KY) 59-58, Nprth Nrunswick (NC) beat Cross 34-33, and Nation Ford downed Marlboro County 38-34. In boys action, Summerville edged CVenter Point (AL) 39-57, Sumter defeated Forest Hills (NC) 60-49 and Marlboro County stopped North Brunswick (NC) 56-46.
