Siblings power Riptides to strong showing in Savannah

riptideslogoThe locally-based Riptides Racing Team kicked off their summer competition schedule with their first meet in Savannah, GA.  More than a dozen members of Riptides travelled to Savannah April 22-23 for the IM-Extreme Challenge and posted almost 75 percent personal best times, 12 new SC Swimming State Championship qualifying times and 3 new team records.

Andi Churchill posted best times in the 400 meter Individual Medley and 200 meter breaststroke.  Connor Churchill also posted best times in the 200 backstroke and 200 breaststroke.

Danielle Flaherty swam to bests in the 400 free, 400 IM and 200 butterfly.  Jake Flaherty followed suit with best times in the 400 free, 100 backstroke, 200 IM and 100 breaststroke.  The younger Flaherty also achieved a new SC q-time in the 100 backstroke.

Joe Guthinger achieved best times in the 100 backstroke and 200 IM; his other events were all swum for the first time.

Ella Habib swam all events for the first time and earned two SC q-times in the 100 backstroke and butterfly events.  Older sister Kailey Habib achieved 4 best times including a 27 second improvement in the 400 IM and narrowly missed an SC q-time in the 200 butterfly.

Hannah McDonough swam to 3 best times and a new SC State q-time in the 100 backstroke.

Kylie McWhorter picked up two best times in the 200 IM and 100 butterfly, improving 27 and 24 seconds respectively.  Peyton McWhorter was 5-for-5 in best times and added new SC State q-times in the 200 and 400 IM events and 200 butterfly.

Ian Morgan raced to 4 best times, achieved new SC State q-times in the 200 and 400 IM events and set team records in the 200 backstroke, breaststroke and IM events.

Ella Speir went 5-for-5 in best times and achieved new SC State q-times in 100 backstroke, 200 free and 200 IM.

The outing for Riptides Racing Team was a great event for the athletes and newly promoted head coach Mary Churchill.  The success at the GCAT IMX Challenge has put Riptides Racing Team in a good position for the rest of the summer.

Next for Riptides Racing Team is the ASL Junior Jaguar meet in Augusta, GA next month.
