Sinclair erupts for five TDs to carry Seahawks to win

mbfoot-22socMyrtle Beach High senior running back Brandon Sinclair literally walked in his father’s footsteps – or actually ran in his dad’s cleat marks – in leading the Seahawks to a 34-32 victory over rival Socastee on Friday night.

Playing on the same field where father Randy Sinclair used to wow crowds with incredible rushing performances, Brandon Sinclair put on a show that topped his old man. The younger Sinclair rushed for 289 yards and five touchdowns to carry Myrtle Beach over his father’s alma mater. Sinclair was only 17 yards shy of tying the state record of 306.

But the Braves (0-4) made a valiant bid to upset the No. 4-ranked Seahawks (2-1), coming within a failed 2-point conversion attempt in the final 2 minutes of tying the game up. Socastee quarterback Brandon Goswick got drilled as he unleashed a jump pass to Dalton Jonas for a 12-yard TD, but his 2-point toss in the end zone was batted down by the Myrtle Beach defense and Sinclair put the finishing touches on the game by running out the clock.

The wild game featured a flurry of flags, multiple bouts with cramps, and the ejection of Socastee coach Doug Illing, but those turned out to be footnotes to another roller coaster installment of this rivalry. But the game appeared to be over early as Sinclair ran for three TDs in the first quarter alone for a quick 21-7 lead. Sinclair had two TDs called back and the Braves closed the gap on a pair of long TD passes from Goswick to Aenaes Green and Tyler Karnap. But Sinclair’s 38-yard TD run made it a 28-20 halftime lead, and he added a 6-yard score in the second half to account for all of Myrtle Beach’s TDs.

Like Sinclair, Goswick also had a hand in all his team’s scores. He scored on a fourth-down bootleg from 4 yards out to make it 28-26 in the third period, and he led the Braves on a long TD drive late in the fourth to set up the possible tying score. But Socastee failed on its third 2-point attempt of the game, which proved to be the difference.

Socastee travels to North Myrtle Beach next week in search of its first win, while the Seahawks host Carolina Forest.
