Six St. James wrestlers win Lower State championships

The St. James wrestling team didn’t get the coveted team championship it was hoping for, but several Sharks will get the chance to claim their own state titles.

St. James dominated the Class AAA Lower State individual championships at North Myrtle Beach on Saturday, winning six of the 14 weight classes heading into next weekend’s individual state finals.

St. James’ Mason Elliott (126), Jaime Bolduc (132), Codi Rothermel (138), John Van Slooten (145), Derek Rothermel (152) and Austin Brown (220) won their respective weight classes.

St. James claimed double the number of the titles as the next highest school. Chapin, which defeated the Sharks in the Lower State Finals earlier this month, had three Lower State champions.

The Sharks also had runner-up Gregg Johnson (170) reach the finals before dropping an 8-3 decision to Chapin’s Devin Lawrence. With the top four in each division advancing to state, St. James will be represented in eight weight classes, with John Delbianco (120) also qualifying.

Myrtle Beach’s Jonathan Iseman (113), Daniel Miller (145), Joseph Desjardins (152), Tevin Cheatham (160) and Miguel Mejia (170) all qualified for state, giving the Seahawks five wrestlers in next week’s Class AAA tourney.

Socastee’s Dylan Martin (113) and Craig Burton (285) also finished second in their divisions, and Justin Knipper (106) and Kyle Burton (220) gave the Braves four state qualifiers.

North Myrtle Beach’s Steven Small (120) finished second and teammates Hampton Harmon (182) and Tanner Fallenz (138) also qualified to give the Chiefs three grapplers in the state tourney.

Brown was the lone Shark to win by pin, sticking Chapin’s Brandon Owens’ back to the mat in 5:30 flat. The other five St. James grapplers to capture Lower State championships did so with hard-fought decisions.

Elliott took a 9-3 decision from Dreher’s Sheldon Melvin; Bolduc earned a 7-4 win over Bluffton’s Austin Farmer; Codi Rothermel won 5-0 over Chapin’s Forest Touchberry, C, 5-0; Van Slooten shut out Dreher’s Chris Bloch 4-0; and Derek Rothermel claimed a 7-3 decision from Chapin’s Chase Owens.
