Socastee boys, girls capture Horry County Championships

The Socastee High boys and girls cross country teams ran away with the Horry County Championships on Saturday.

Running on their home course, the Socastee boys captured six of the top seven spots for 18 total points. The Braves were led by senior Austin Poisson, who completed the 5000-meter (3.1-mile) layout in 17 minutes, 34 seconds, and Justin Knipper, who finished on the medalist’s heels in 17:39.

Myrtle Beach, which finished second with 45 points, saw freshman Ethan Epstein claim third place in 17:56. Socastee swept the next five places, Nicholas Koonce (18:23), William Vaught (18:25), Jake Perito (18:35) and Christopher Matlashew (18:36).

Jared Woody (18:38) was North Myrtle Beach’s top finisher in eighth as the Chiefs (88) finished fourth. Myrtle Beach swept the next four spots – Mehrzad Namiranian (18:45), Nicholas Sylvestri (18:55.79), Jimmy Recinos (19:06) and Brooks Swanson (19:07). Zachary Jones (19:26) was the top finisher for Conway (87), which finished third by a single point over NMB.

Youth was served in the girls event, with a pair of freshmen finishing out front followed by an eighth grader. Myrtle Beach’s Madison Tilford (20:48) beating North Myrtle Beach’s Drake Jenerette (21:06). Socastee’s Crystal Shimer (21:12) finished third, with Conway’s Madilyn Crabill (21:16) and Alyssa Waibel (21:27) rounding out the top five.

Freshman Rebekah Booth (21:38) placed sixth for Socastee, which tallied 39 team points. Myrtle Beach, which finished second with 54 points, saw Kailey Flannelly (21:50) and Mary Beth Hervig (22:08) finish seventh and eighth, followed by five consecutive Lady Braves – Savannah Tolonese (22:22.58), Jill Dudley (22:30.31), Lylee Dzieken (22:36), Skye Pellicia (22:37) and Christin Talbot (22:51).

Conway (55), which finished third to Myrtle Beach by a single point, saw freshman Edris Davis (22:57) cross the line first for the Lady Tigers to beat North Myrtle Beach (89).
