Soccer: Socastee sweeps South Florence in shutouts

socgsoc-goalkeeperThe Socastee High boys and girls soccer teams combined to score 19 goals to none for their South Florence counterparts in a successful road trip to Florence on Friday.

Eight different Braves scored goals and goalkeeper Cole Renfrow kept the Bruins out of his net for a 10-0 region victory. The Lady Braves were only one goal off the boys’ pace for a 9-0 win over the Lady Bruins.

The Socastee boys scored five goals in each half and eight different Braves found the back of the net in a balanced attack. Chris Matlashewski had two goals and three assists, and Zac Anderson had two goals and one assist. Jake Perito, Nick Koonce, Zendon Andrews, Connor Fata, Tanner Goshert and Konner Price also scored. Perito added two assists and Renfrow made two saves for the Braves (7-3 overall, 3-0 Region 6-4A).

The Lady Braves were led by Brittany Leftis’ hat trick and Mellette Mackie’s two goals. Haley Altman, Crystal Shimer, Rosie Serradimigni and Melisa Garcia also scored for Socastee, which travels to Conway on Tuesday.

Girls

* Carolina Forest 6, Ben Lippen 1: After suffering two tough losses in the Crescent Cup girls soccer tournament, the Lady Panthers made sure they didn’t leave Greenville empty-handed by winning their tourney finale on Saturday.

After turning in sub-par defensive performances in a 6-2 loss to Wade Hampton and an 8-3 defeat to Nation Ford, Carolina Forest’s defense showed marked improvement in the finale. Led by goalkeeper Cameron McWhorter, the Lady Panthers didn’t give up a goal until the final seconds to spoil the shutout.

But Carolina Forest’s offense provide plenty of support, with Haley Trunkett and Amber Rutledge scoring two goals apiece. Abbie McCoy made two assists and converted a nice header off a corner kick, and Kirsten Mann scored her first goal of the season to round of the Lady Panthers’ scoring.

Boys

* Carolina Forest 5, Sumter 1: The Panthers broke open a tight game with four second-half goals to defeat the Gamecocks for their first Region 6-4A win.

Carolina Forest (2-4 overall, 1-2 region) got a pair of goals from Anthony Powalie, while Freddie Kane, Alan Rosas and Trayson Kanniard added one goal apiece. Goalkeeper Shayne Steiner collected 14 saves.

Carolina Forest travels to South Florence on Tuesday.

* North Myrtle Beach 2, Wilson 1: The Chiefs got goals from Samir Cardoza (assisted by Cristian Marcellio) and Simon Sander (assisted by Mitch Backer) to knock off the Tigers for a Region 7-3A victory.

* Georgetown 1, St. James 0: The Sharks suffered a tough loss to the Bulldogs, falling to Georgetown for the first time in school history.
