Socastee boys run to county XC title for late ‘Coach Mac’

After losing their former coach and the founder of the Horry County Cross Country Championships earlier this week, the Socastee High boys went out and won the event for the late Jon McKelvey.

The Braves put their top five runners in the top 11 of the race on their home course Saturday for 32 total points to edge runner-up Aynor (37). They dedicated the win to McKelvey, who passed away after a long coaching career at Socastee. He even helped start the Horry County Championships for local runners.

Myrtle Beach’s Ethan Epstein won the boys individual title with a time of 17:10, edging Socastee’s Justin Knipper (17:29). The Braves saw Chris Matlashewski finish fourth, Cameron Amann take sixth,   Nick Koonce in ninth and Nicholas Lefever in 11th to round out the team win.

Myrtle Beach (88) finished third in the boys standings, followed by St. James (103), Conway (132) and North Myrtle Beach (138).

St. James and Aynor tied for the girls title with 55 points to prevent a Socastee (57) sweep.

North Myrtle Beach’s Drake Jenerette led all the girls across the finish line in a time of 20:36, beating out runner-up Samantha Cunningham of St. James (20:45.91) and Socastee’s Jill Dudley (20:54) for individual honors.

St. James’ Christine Cunningham placed fourth, Kelsey Glover was 14th, Karleigh Jones finished 16th, and Natalie Feagin placed 19th to lead the Lady Sharks to a share of the crown with Aynor. Socastee, Conway (85), North Myrtle Beach (129) and Myrtle Beach (134) rounded out the girls team scoring.

The region track meets will be held in two weeks.
