Socastee uses overtime to advance in Beach Ball

Socastee took advantage of an injury to Spartanburg Day’s Zion Williamson and scored a 63-56 overtime victory to advance to the quarterfinal round of the 2017 Beach Ball Classic at the Myrtle Beach (SC) Convention Center. The win is the fifth first round victory for the Braves (6-5) and first overtime win in three tries.

Sophomore Andrew Gardner paced Socastee with 18 points and 12 rebounds.  Jay Williams chipped in 17 points and 10 boards for the Braves.

Matthew Brown scored 21 points to lead Spartanburg Day.  Kyle Tracy added 17 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals for the Griffins.

Socastee advances to the quarterfinal round to face the No. 1 ranked team in the country, Montverde Academy in a 8:45pm match-up Thursday. Spartanburg Day will face Albany Academy Thursday at 1:45 p.m. in the consolation bracket.

Montverde 94, Albany 61 – Montverde Academy (FL) defeated Albany Academy (NY) 94-61 in the opening round of the 2017 Beach Ball Classic.

Michael Devoe scored 24 points on a perfect night from the field as he connected on all 10 of his shots from the field.  RJ Barrett added 22 points and five blocks for the Eagles.

Montverde advances to the quarterfinal round to face Socastee (SC) on Thursday at 8:45 p.m.  Albany will face Spartanburg Day (SC) on Thursday at 1:45 p.m. in the consolation bracket.

DeMatha 74, Lone Peak 63 – DeMatha (MD) defeated Lone Peak (UT) 74-63 in the opening round of the 2017 Beach Ball Classic to remain undefeated at 8-0.

Earl Timberlake scored a game-high 22 points to lead DeMatha while Justin Moore added 17 points.

Chantry Ross and Steven Ashworth gave Lone Peak a one-two punch by scoring 21 and 20 points, respectively.

DeMatha advances to the quarterfinal round to face Imhotep (PA) on Thursday at 7:00 p.m.  Lone Peak will face Bishop Gorman (NV) on Thursday at 1:45 p.m. in the consolation bracket.

Imhotep 53, Bishop Gorman 49 – For the second time in as many years, Imhotep (PA) has defeated Bishop Gorman (NV) in the Beach Ball Classic.  The Panthers scored a 53-49 opening round victory this year to follow up on last year’s 72-54 quarterfinal win.

Jamil Riggins came off of the bench to lead Imhotep with 14 points while Chereef Knox added 12 points and eight rebounds for the Panthers.

Jamal Bey, who came in averaging over 25 points per game, led the Gaels with 13 points as he struggled from the floor shooting just 4-for-11.  Noah Taitz added 12 points for the Gaels..

Imhotep advances to the quarterfinal round to face DeMatha (MD) on Thursday at 7:00 p.m.  Bishop Gorman will face Lone Peak Thursday at 1:45 p.m. in the consolation bracket.
