Braves fly unfamiliar skies to knock off Knights, 30-12

Socastee experienced little more than a speed bump en route to its 30-12 first-round playoff victory over visiting Crestwood on Friday night.

After taking the opening kickoff, the Braves (11-0) were held to three plays and a punt for the first time all season on their first offensive series. But that was about the last time the fourth-seeded Knights (6-5) held Socastee in check.

The Braves scored on their next three possessions to build a 16-0 halftime lead and they never looked back, winning just their second home playoff game in school history. The first home postseason victory came at this time last year over Berkeley, which will visit Socastee for next week’s second-round matchup.

Socastee quarterback Hunter Renfrow, who primarily serves as a runner out of the Braves’ triple-option attack, completed only 5 of 8 passes but threw three touchdown passes to catch Crestwood off guard after it had some early success stopping the option.

Crestwood held Socastee to a 36-yard Matt Trimby field goal for the game’s opening score, then the Braves defense held the Knights on a pair of fourth-down attempts to set the table for the offense on the ensuing two drives.

Zack Hyde hauled in a 12-yard touchdown pass from Hunter Renfrow that was tipped by a defender, then Tommy Lazaroff capped a long TD march that appeared to finally start to wear down the stingy Crestwood defense with a 3-yard TD run for a 16-0 lead at the break.

Crestwood made its first touchdown drive to open the second half, with Tyson Williams’ 3-yard TD run capping an impressive series, but the Braves countered with a nice drive of their own. Renfrow delivered a reverse screen pass to tight end Dakota Morgan, who fought off two defenders to get into the end zone from 14 yards out.

Crestwood scored quickly on its next drive but missed the 2-point conversion for the second time of the night to cut the deficit to 23-12. But after a time-consuming drive on the ground, Renfrow connected with Delano Walters for a 21-yard TD toss to put the game away.
