Socastee halts Hilton Head but Renfrow injures ankle

socfoot-5cutThe Socastee High football team remains undefeated, but the Braves (11-0) may have suffered their biggest loss of the season Friday night.

Top-seeded Socastee rolled to a 31-6 victory over visiting Hilton Head in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs, but All-Lower State quarterback Hunter Renfrow suffered an ankle injury and missed most of the game. His status is uncertain for next week’s second-round matchup with Hartsville.

Socastee’s Delano Walters picked up the slack of his injured quarterback by rushing for a pair of first-quarter touchdowns of 34 and 5 yards for a quick 14-0 lead. Renfrow hurt his ankle on the play before Walter’s second TD and saw limited action the rest of the half.

Renfrow did not play in the second half but the Braves (11-0) had the game well in hand. Buck Bacot scored on a 4-yard TD run and Matt Trimby added a 35-yard field goal to give Socastee a 24-6 advantage at the intermission.

The Braves continued to move the ball behind backup Jordan Hodge in the second half but couldn’t seem to out one in the end zone until the final minutes. Walters almost had another 34-yard TD run but fumbled through the end zone, and later was chased down from behind near the goalline.

The Braves also dropped a pair of potential TD passes, but Hodge threw a 9-yard TD pass to a diving Finn Melko for the only points of the second half.

Next week Socastee will play host to Hartsville, which knocked the Braves out of the Lower State semifinals last season.
