Socastee standout Renfrow earns Clemson scholarship

clemfoot-renfrowFormer Socastee High football standout Hunter Renfrow passed on scholarship offers from smaller schools for the opportunity to follow his dream at Clemson as a preferred walk-on.

He didn’t waste any time earning a full scholarship. Tigers coach Dabo Swinney made the announcement following Saturday’s scrimmage and it was clear Renfrow has already earned the respect of his coaches and teammates.

“The beautiful thing about Hunter Renfrow, you talk about a team that went crazy when this young man got this scholarship,” Swinney said. “The message with him as I told them team is he kind of looks like the trainer or something. But don’t judge a book by its cover. This kid can flat out play. He can flat out play here or anywhere. This guy is going to have an excellent career at Clemson. He can fly. He is explosive. He has great ball skills. He is gifted football IQ wise and our team knows that.”

After playing quarterback, punter and returnman at Socastee, Renfrow will provide depth at wide receiver for the Tigers, as well as some special teams duties. The 5-foot-10, 170-pound redshirt freshman, Renfrow doesn’t exactly fit the mold of a big-time ACC player, but a ruler and scale can’t measure his heart.

“When you look at him you would never think that this is a football player, but that is the beautiful thing about football. Football players come in all shapes and sizes. It’s what makes this great game so awesome,” Swinney said. “Here is a young that has come out here and grinded and earned the respect of all his teammates and is going to play and going to help us win as a redshirt freshman. There is no doubt about it. Proud of him.”

Renfrow was one of only two walk-ons to earn a scholarship Saturday. Punter Andy Teasdale also got the nod and is expected to start in the Sept. 5 opener against Wofford. Renfrow will also serve as his backup.
