Socastee stops St. James for region wrestling repeat

socwrestle-hodgeThe Socastee High wrestling team wrapped up the Region 7-3A regular-season championship on Tuesday with a 39-28 victory over visiting St. James.

The Braves (19-1) got key pins from Dylan Martin (120), Jordan Hodge (132), John Leggett (152), Zach Mor (182) and Joe Smolenski (195). Teammates Justin Knipper (126) won his match by technical fall and Kyle Burton (220) earned a major decision to put the Braves over the top.

St. James made a strong showing behind the first-round pins of Steven Deible (160) and John Foster (285), but the rest of their wins came via decision. MacKenzie Tecco (106), Chase Smith (113), Jacob Siefert (138), Michael McWhorter (145) and James Sanders (170) won their matches for the Sharks.

The win gives Socastee back-to-back region titles and gives the Braves a top seed in the Lower State Tournament. The Sharks earn the No. 2 seed and will serve as hosts of the tourney.
