Socastee’s Frye selected Region 8 Player of the Year

Socastee High’s Travis Frye was named the Region VIII-AAA Player of the Year after leading the rebuilding Braves to the Class AAA playoffs.

The senior guard averaged 18 points, seven rebounds and five assists per game this season, but his numbers improved as the Braves needed him most. Frye scored 31 and 26 points in Socastee’s final two games to grab the fourth and final playoff spot.

Making Frye’s stats more impressive is his high shooting percentage. He shot 40 percent from 3-point range and an incredible 93 percent from the free throw line to add efficiency to his list of weapons.

Frye was joined on the all-region first team by St. James’ Caleb Duggan (20 ppg), Myrtle Beach’s Tramond Wilson (13 ppg), Wilson’s Brandon Jones (16 ppg) and Georgetown’s Tevin Johnson (11 ppg).

North Myrtle Beach sophomore Josh Lindsey was named the newcomer of the year and Myrtle Beach coach Craig Martin earned the coach of the year honor after leading the Seahawks to the No. 2 seed.

Alandre Davis (Wilson), J.C. Cavin (St. James), E.J. Goings (Myrtle Beach), Jaquan Grissett (North Myrtle Beach) and Donovan Cann (Socastee) made the all-region second team. Matt Lindsey (North Myrtle Beach), Braxton Ivery and Patrell Rogers (Wilson), and Nolin Butler and Emaray Johnson (Myrtle Beach) made the third team.
