Soccer at the Beach trades cold for rain, but hot action

mbsoc-rainThe Second Annual Soccer at the Beach tournament brings 10 top boys and girls soccer teams to the Grand Strand this weekend. Unfortunately, for the second straight year, Mother Nature has her own agenda.

Last year’s inaugural event saw heavy rains throughout the tournament, and this year’s showdown will feature unseasonably cool temperatures approaching the freezing mark.

But that’s the good thing about soccer; the show must go on. Barring thunderstorms, the teams will play through the cold and rain on the artificial turf fields of Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium and Ashley Booth Field.

Top boys teams include Class 4A powers Socastee, Riverside and Fort Dorchester and Class 3A teams Hanahan and No. 7-ranked host Myrtle Beach, the defending tournament champion. No. 8-ranked Newberry is the lone Class 2A representative.

Girls teams include Class 4A schools Dutch Fork, ranked No. 3 in the state, Fort Dorchester, Socastee, and No. 8 in Class 3A Myrtle Beach. See the complete schedule below:
