Soccer: Conway, Socastee boys, girls net region wins

consoc-8Both the Socastee and Conway High boys and girls soccer teams opened Region 6-4A play this week with big wins:

Girls

* Socastee 3, Sumter 0: The Lady Braves posted a shutout against the Gamecocks in the Region 6-4A opener for both teams.

Socastee goalkeeper Mackenzie Runyon had five saves to lead the defense, and Haley Altman had one goal and an assist to lead a balanced offense. Teammates Crystal Shimer and Katelyn Price scored one goal apiece.

* Conway 6, South Florence 1: The Lady Tigers won their home and region opener over the Lady Bruins, scoring six unanswered goals to improve to 2-1 on the season.

After giving up a goal in less than a minute to open the game, the Lady Tigers settled in never looked back. Junior forward Zakera Chadmon scored three goals in the first half and ended with five for the night. Sophomore Bailey Beck scored Conway’s other goal – her third of the season.

* West Florence 3, Carolina Forest 1: The Lady Panthers lost their region opener against the Lady Knights. Haley Trunkett scored the lone goal for the Lady Panthers.

* Christian Academy 4, Kings Academy 0: The Lady Saints improved to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in region play with a shutout victory over the Lady Lions.

Christian Academy’s Katya Durocher tallied a hat trick and Julia Markley scored the other goal for the Lady Saints. Assists were made by Brae Jackson, Julia Markley, Caroline Gore, and Hannah Minnix.

Boys

* Conway 2, South Florence 1: The Tigers won their home and region opener with a victory over the Knights. Sammy Sawyer scored both goals for Conway.

* Socastee 8, Sumter 1: The Braves scored six unanswered goals to start the region match and cruised to an easy road win over the Gamecocks.

The Braves were led by Jake Perito and Chris Matlashewski’s two goals apiece, and single goals were scored by Josh Mackie, Ashton Newman, Jahmar Watson, and Tanner Goshert.

Socastee’s Konner Price had two assists, and Perito, Mackie, Ricardo Farinas, Kayque Stoffel and Jahmier Watson had one each. Cole Renfrow and John Cetin combined for five saves as the Braves improved to 6-3 overall and 2-0 in Region 6-4A.

Socastee’s next game will be at home Friday versus South Florence.

* St James 3, North Myrtle Beach 0: The Sharks earned a shutout victory over the rival Chiefs on Tuesday night thanks to a combined effort by goalkeepers Max Davila and Marcus Barne.

St James’ goals were scored by John Astudillo, Drew Volpe and Andres Celis. St. James has a region match at home against Georgetown on Friday night.
