Soccer: Region 7-3A teams sweep through first round

The St. James High girls soccer team didn’t get the home-field advantage that normally comes with a region championship and a No. 1 seed, but it didn’t seem to matter to the Lady Sharks.

St. James won its seventh consecutive game in easy fasion in Monday’s first round of the Class 3A playoffs, shutting out Lakewood 7-0 at Myrtle Beach’s Ashley Booth Field. St. James’ soccer field is being resodded this season.

The Lady Sharks got a hat trick from senior Jenny Breeden, who also assisted on a first-half goal to give St. James a commanding 4-0 lead at the half. Nicole Myers and Bethany Goodrech added two goals apiece to cap the scoring and first-year goalkeeper Kimmie Hotzelt made four saves to preserve the shutout.

St. James advanced to the second round to face the winner of Monday’s matchup between second-seeded James Island and third-seeded Airport. The Lady Shrks will host again at Ashley Booth Field.

* North Myrtle Beach 4, Hartsville 0: The fourth-seeded Lady Chiefs knocked off top-seeded Hartsville to advance to the second round.

Ashley Robinson netted a hat trick and Courtni Wyatt added the other. Goalkeeper Kate Carr had four saves for the Lady Chiefs, who advance to face Swansea on Wednesday.

* Socastee 10 Darlington 0: The third-seeded Lady Braves scored a mercy-rule victory over the Lady Falcons to reach the second round. Socastee travels to top-seeded Brookland-Cayce on Wednesday.

* Dutch Fork 7, Carolina Forest 2: The second-seeded Lady Panthers were eliminated in the first round of the Class 4A state playoffs with a lopsided loss to third-seeded at the Coastal Carolina University soccer complex.

Dutch Fork scored three goals in the opening 18 minutes to take a commanding early lead. Carolina Forest’s Meghan Fludgate put the Lady Panthers on the scoreboard to open the second half and close the gap.

But Dutch Fork responded with three more goals in a 9-minute span to put the game away. Riley Lynch scored off an assist from Erica Gazzani to cap the scoring and the season for the Lady Panthers.
