Soccer: MB nets region title; Lady Saints fall in semifinals

mbgsoc-8The Myrtle Beach High girls soccer team wrapped up the Region 7-3A championship on its home field Thursday night, defeating St. James 2-0 to clinch the Lady Seahawks’ first region title since 2011.

The No. 13-ranked Lady Seahawks (15-1 overall, 10-0 region) made it a clean sweep through the region and put a cap on the regular season wityh yet another shutout victory, their sixth consecutive goose egg posted by an opponent and their 14th shutout overall.

Behind another strong performance by goalkeeper Gabby Moore and her backline defense, Myrtle Beach defeated the runner-up Lady Sharks 2-0 for the second time this season. St. James (9-4-1, 8-2) needed to win by three scores to defend their region title via goal differential.

Any hopes of holding Myrtle Beach’s explosive offense went out the door just 16 minutes into the match. Tori Zeltner, who suffered a broken nose in Wednesday night’s win over North Myrtle Beach and played Thursday while wearing a full facemask, launched a hard shot at the St. James keeper, who mishandled the ball. Myrtle Beach’s Bailey Richard was on the spot with a quick out through for a 1-0 lead.

Richard also scored the Lady Seahawks’ second goal in the 53rd minute. Myrtle Beach’s Summer Penny launched a nice cross in front of the face of the goal and Richard one-timed it into the back of the net to begin the celebration.

* Beaufort Academy 2, Christian Academy of Myrtle Beach 0: The Lady Saints allowed two early goals and couldn’t battle back against host Beaufort Academy in the SCISA Class A/AA girls soccer state semifinals. CAMB returns its entire roster for the 2015 season to make another run at the state title.

Myrtle Beach carries the top seed into next week’s Class 3A playoffs and will host the No. 4 seed from Region 8-3A on Monday. The Lady Seahawks can keep home field advantage all the way to the Lower State championship game if they continue to win.

St. James earns the No. 2 seed and also hosts a first-round game on Monday against an opponent to be determined.

Boys

* Socastee 4, St. James 1: Wesley Durant scored a pair of goals to lead the No. 8-ranked Braves past the rival Sharks in the regular season finale for both teams.

Socastee carries the No. 2 seed into next week’s Class 3A tournament while third-seeded St. James will hit the road for Tuesday’s opening round.
