Soccer: Local teams seek titles at Nash, Cav Kickoff

nmbsoc-7A pair of out-of-area powers crashed the girls bracket of the Michael Nash Memorial Soccer Tournament on Friday, but several local boys teams fared well against outside foes and remain very much in play for the preseason tournament title.

The St. James boys improved to 2-0 in the tournament with a 7-1 victory over Airport, and tournament host North Myrtle Beach battled West Ashley to a 1-all draw. The Chiefs remained unbeaten at 1-0-1 after two rounds, and Socastee is 1-0 entering Saturday play.

In girls action, state power Dreher swept local squads Myrtle Beach 3-0 and St. James 4-2, and Bluffton beat North Myrtle Beach 3-1. The Lady Chiefs saw junior Hadley Hudson score her first goal of the season, and goalkeeper Montana Fields had nine saves in the loss. Socastee defeated Loris 7-0,  and Myrtle Beach bounced back from the loss to shut out Conway 5-0.

The only remaining unbeaten girls team is Christian Academy of Myrtle Beach, which rolled to a 6-0 shutout over Aynor after tying North Myrtle Beach in Thursday’s opener. All six of the Lady Saints’ goals were scored by different players, including Brae Jackson, who added two assists.

The girls final round and final is set for Saturday, while the boys championship game will be played Sunday. There is a full day of action set for Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. at the North Myrtle Beach Park & Soccer Complex.

Cavalier Kickoff Classic

* The Carolina Forest scored a 3-0 shutout over Aiken in the first round of the Cavalier Kickoff Classic, where the Lady Panthers finished runner-up in last season’s preseason tournament.

Carolina Forest started off slow but finally converted on a corner kick from Sarah DiSalvo to Alexis McCarthy for a 1-0 halftime lead. It didn’t take long for Sara Padula to find the back of the net in the second half, scoring on an assist by McCarthy. The same two connected for the final goal to secure the win. Goalkeeper Cameron McWhorter posted the shutout.

The Lady Panthers return to action at 2 p.m. Saturday in a rematch of last year’s championship game with Providence Athletic Club.
