Soccer: Seahawks, Sharks score first-round shutouts

sjgsoc-brandon2The top-seeded Myrtle Beach High girls soccer team scored its eighth straight shutout and its 12th in its l;ast 15 outings to rout No. 4 Berkely 4-0 in Monday’s first round of the Class 3A playoffs.

The Lady Seahawks (16-1), winners of 16 straight games overall, saw Tori Zeltner and Bailey Richard score goals in the first half for a 2-0 halftime advantage. McKenzie Jones added a pair of scores in the second half as Myrtle Beach emptied the bench against the visiting Lady Stags.

Myrtle Beach’s impressive shutout streak almost came to an end late in the game when the referee incorrectly credited Berkeley with a goal off an indirect kick. The ball was not touched by a teammate before it found the back of the net and the goal was wiped off the board to extend the streak to 640 scoreless minutes.

Myrtle Beach will play host to the winner of Monday’s Airport-Lakewood matchup in Wednesday’s second round.

* St. James 7, Hanahan 0: The second-seeded Lady Sharks struck early and often to knock out the
No. 3 Lady Hawks in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs.

St. James freshman Haley Brandon scored on a header to open the scoring just 2 minutes in, and she added three more goals in the first half to give the Lady Sharks a 4-0 halftime lead.

Bethany Goodrich scored a pair of second-half goals and Jenny Breeden added another to cap the scoring. St. James will travel to top-seeded Hartsville on Wednesday.

* Hilton Head 6, Socastee 0: The Lady Braves’ season came to an end in the first round with a shutout loss to top-seeded Hilton Head.
