Soccer: Seahawks, Sharks win, set up key showdown

mbgsoc-zeltnernmbThe St. James High girls soccer team kept their slim region repeat hopes alive with a 2-1 comeback victory over rival Socastee on Wednesday night.

Trailing 1-0 at halftime, the Lady Sharks (9-3-1 overall, 7-1 Region 7-3A) evened the score on a header by Haley Brandon off a corner kick. The match remained deadlocked until three minutes left to play, when Brandon assisted Jenny Breeden for the game-winner.

The victory secures at least a second-place finish in the region for St. James thanks to a season sweep of rival Socastee, which earned the No. 3 seed for next week playoffs.

The Lady Sharks now must play their fourth game in as many nights at first-place Myrtle Beach on Thursday. The Lady Seahawks defeated St. James 2-0 last week, so the Lady Sharks need to win by a three-goal differential to win the tiebreaker against Myrtle Beach.

* Myrtle Beach 4, North Myrtle Beach 0: The Lady Seahawks (15-1, 9-0) kept their unbeaten region record intact with a shutout victory over the rival Lady Chiefs.

Myrtle Beach’s Tori Zeltner and Mackenzie Jones scored a pair of goals apiece to lead the Lady Seahawks to the win and another showdown with St. James on Thursday with the region title on the line.

Myrtle Beach needs only to beat St. James or lose by one goal to secure the region title.

* Waccamaw 4, Carolina Forest 2: The Region 6-4A champion Lady Panthers (9-3) got a non-region tuneup for the playoffs against the host Lady Warriors, the top-ranked team in Class 2A.

Lexi McCarthy scored both goals for Carolina Forest, which will take a No. 1 seed into next week’s Lower State tournament.

* Myrtle Beach 5, North Myrtle Beach 0: The No. 3-ranked Seahawks (17-3-1, 10-0) closed out a perfect region schedule and regular season with a shutout victory over the visiting Chiefs.

Five different Seahawks scored goals – Foster Russell, Helgi Nati, Franc Lamcja, Nico Sandoz and Abdul Masharicov. Myrtle Beach’s Jarrett Lewis had two assists and Nick Beauchamp and Arly Barr had one apiece.

Myrtle Beach goalkeeper Skyler Hribar made four saves to lead the Seahawks to their shutout 14th shutout of the season. Top-seeded Myrtle Beach opens the playoffs against visiting Hanahan on Tuesday.
