Soccer: Sharks avenge loss to Bulldogs with 6-1 victory

sjsoc-5The St. James High boys soccer avenged its toughest lost of the season in emphatic fashion Tuesday night with a 6-1 victory over host Georgetown.

The Sharks (7-4 overall, 4-3 Region 7-3A) suffered a 1-0 defeat to the Bulldogs (8-7-1, 3-4) earlier this season, marking the first time in program history that St. James lost to a much-improved Georgetown squad.

But the Sharks, one season removed from playing for the Class 3A state title, reasserted themselves as contenders by blowing out the Bulldogs to claim sole possession of third place in the region.

St. James’ Andres Celis and John Astudillo scored two goals each, while Garrett Greene and Drew Volpe scored one goal apiece. Riley Parker made two assists, while Celis, Greene and Charles Ouverson all had assists. Goalkeeper Max Davila had five saves.

The Sharks travel out of league play to face Waccamaw on Wednesday.

Girls

* Carolina Forest 5, Sumter 1: The Lady Panthers remained in the hunt for the Region 6-4A title with a home win over the Lady Gamecocks.

Carolina Forest, which improved to 6-1 in the region, got a pair of early goals from Amber Rutledge, and it turned out to be all the scoring the Lady Panthers needed. Christina Neideregger scored on a header to give Carolina Forest a 3-1 lead at halftime, and Katelyn Perry and Haley Trunkett added goals in the second half to put the game away.

The Lady Panthers face another big region game Friday against South Florence.

* West Brunswick (NC) 2, North Myrtle Beach 0: Lady Chiefs goalkeeper Montana Fields had three saves before leaving the game, and freshman goalkeeper Jordan Hernandez had eight saves in relief.

But it wasn’t enough to beat the Lady Trojans on their home turf over the North Carolina border. The Lady Chiefs (8-3, 6-1) travel to Conway for another non-region match Wednesday.
