Soccer: SJ sweeps NMB; CF posts pair of shutouts

sjgsoc-8The St. James High girls soccer team isn’t ready to throw in the towel in their title defense of the Region 7-3A crown.

Despite suffering their first region loss to Myrtle Beach last week, the Lady Sharks (8-3-1- overall, 7-1 region) kept their slim repeat hopes alive by shutting out North Myrtle Beach 3-0 on Tuesday night.

St. James got goals from Jenny Breeden, Haley Brandon and Nicole Meyers and the Lady Sharks’ defense, led by Mary Ropp and Hannah Grace Schuech, did the rest. Goalkeeper Shannon Johnson posted another shutout between the pipes.

St. James’ victory sets up a rematch with Socastee on Wednesday (the Lady Sharks won the first meeting 4-0). A win will set up a showdown for a share of the region title against Myrtle Beach on Thursday.

The St. James boys made the long drive to Wilson but returned with an 8-1 victory and a shot at second place in the region.

St. James’ Keaton Zimmer and Brandon Wallace scored a pair of goals apiece, John Astudillo had a goal and two assists, JD Vereen had a goal and one assist and goalkeeper Andrew Bocholz left the pipes late in the game to get a rare goal. He also had eight saves for the Sharks, who host Socastee on Thursday with the No. 2 seed in the region on the line.

* Myrtle Beach 11, Georgetown 1: The No. 3-ranked Seahawks celebrated Senior Night with an easy victory over the winless Bulldogs.

Senior Nati Helgi recorded a hat trick to lead the onslaught. The Seahawks (16-3-1, 9-0) try to close out a perfect region record Wednesday at rival North Myrtle Beach.

Region 6-4A

The Carolina Forest boys and girls soccer teams scored a shutouts over visiting West Florence to complete the region schedule before advancing to next week’s playoffs.

The Carolina Forest boys took a 2-0 victory behind goals from Ian McIlrath and Diego Alvarado. Goalkeeper Bryce Garrell had 10 saves to preserve the shutout for the Panthers (13-5, 6-2).

The Lady Panthers (9-2, 7-1) took a 3-0 win thanks to a pair of goals by Lexi McCarthy and another by Matte Earnest, with all three scores coming in the game’s opening 15 minutes. Goalkeeper Taylor Gazzani had seven saves.
