Soccer: Braves, Panthers score key region sweeps

socgsoc-5The Socastee High girls soccer team stayed alive for a playoff berth and a possible Region 6-4A title by knocking off visiting Sumter 3-1 on Friday night.

The Lady Braves (5-6 overall, 4-2 region) snapped a two-game losing skid to remain one game out of first place behind co-leaders Carolina Forest and West Florence.

Socastee’s goals were scored by Katelyn Price, Mellette Mackie, and Brittany Leftis, while the Lady Braves defense took care of the rest. Goalkeepers Haley Altman (two saves) and Louie Daymiel (one save) preserved the win.

Socastee plays host to South Florence on Tuesday.

* Carolina Forest 2, West Florence 1: The Lady Panthers won their region showdown with the Lady Knights to take over first place in Region 6-4A.

Carolina Forest scored first at the 22-minute mark on a goal from Amber Rutledge that was assisted by Mackenzie Moore. The Lady Panthers scored on a penalty kick by Haley Trunkett to make the halftime score 2-0, and the defense delivered in the second half despite allowing a late goal.

* Socastee 13, Sumter 3: The 10th-ranked Braves struggled in the first half before unleashing an offensive onslaught on the Gamecocks in the second half for a double-digit win.

The Braves trailed only 4-3 at the half but came out firing on all cylinders by scoring nine unanswered goals. Jake Perito had a hat trick, Konner Price and Chris Matlashewski had two goals apiece, and Josh Mackie, Kyle Barry, Salvador Rosas, Ricardo Farinas, Zac Anderson and Jahmir Watson also scored. Perito had three assists and goalkeepers John Cetin and Cole Renfrow had two saves apiece.

* Carolina Forest 2, West Florence 1: The Panthers (5-4, 4-2) picked up an important region victory in a sudden death shootout Friday over the Knights to stay in the hunt for the region title.

After a scoreless first half, Randy Garcia tallied a goal for the Panthers to take the lead 1-0. West Florence answered with a goal 10 minutes later to tie it at 1-all.

The game went into overtime and penalty kicks before the Panthers prevailed 3-2 in PKs. Freddie Kane made two critical saves on two penalty kicks, and teammates Trayson Kanniard, Anthony Powalie and Cole Clark scored their PKs for the win.

Carolina Forest’s next game is Tuesday at Sumter at 7pm.
