Soderberg, Wheeler lift CCU to third at Seminole tourney

Coastal’s score of 852 (280-28-286) is the team’s best by 10 strokes this season and the best by the #50 Chanticleers since shooting 849 at the 2009 Augusta State/Administaff Invitational. The 852 additionally stands as the 13th-best  54-hole score and the ninth-best total.

For Soderberg, the 206 (71-65-70) marks his second-best 54-hole total – winning the 2012 Furman Intercollegiate with a 204 – and was one shot off medalist honors as Florida State’s Daniel Berger – the nation’s fifth-ranked gofler – posted a 205 (67-69-69). Soderberg was even par at the turn after a birdie on the third hole and a bogey on the fourth. He posted back-to-back birdies on holes 10 and 11, bogeyed the par 4 15th hole and bounced back with a birdie on the 16th hole for his round of 2-under par 70 Sunday.

Wheeler posted three rounds under par in a tournament for the first time in his career for his career-best 209 (69-70-70), three strokes better than his previous 54-hole total. Wheeler was even after three holes, getting a par, birdie and bogey. He would birdie holes five and nine to make the turn at 2-under. The sophomore reeled off five pars before a bogey on the 15th hole and a birdie on the par 3 17th hole for his second consecutive round of 70.

Andre Dorn bounced back from his second round 78 to shoot 1-under 71 Sunday. Thanks to his 69 in the opening round, Dorn finished tied for 29th with a 2-over par total of 218 – one stroke shy of his career best. The sophomore was 2-under par through nine holes with birdies on holes five and seven. He would get down to 3-under after a birdie on the par 3 13th hole before a double bogey on the 14th hole and a bogey on the 15th put him at even for the day. He bounced back to birdie the 16th hole and finish with two pars for his 1-under 71.

Roberto Ballesteros tied for 34th, shooting 71-75-75 for a three-day total of 221, and Easton Renwick placed 59th, shooting 80-76-79 for a total of 235. Peter Valaesk, playing as an individual, tied for 42nd with a 223 (75-71-77).

Coastal Carolina will return to action Mar. 25-26, making the short trip to Wilmington, N.C., for the UNC Wilmington Seahawk Intercollegiate at the Country Club of Landfall.
