Softball: Conway, Socastee score key region victories

The Conway High softball team kept its hopes for a second-place finish in Region 6-4A alive with a 6-3 victory over visiting Sumter on Wednesday.

The win puts the Lady Tigers (3-3 region) alone in third place with games against second-place West Florence on Thursday and first-place Carolina Forest on Friday. Conway needs to win both to finish in second place.

Conway’s Sydny Howell (7-4) got the win on the mound, striking out 10 batters while giving up eight hits. Kady Edwards provided the big hit of the night with a three-run home run to left field to give Conway a 6-2 lead going into the final inning.

Conway’s Deanna Deluca and Coker Edge went 2-for-3 and Brandye Huggins, Neci Hemingway and Ashlyn Hardwick each had singles.

* Socastee 15, Wilson 0: The Lady Braves (14-8, 7-2) needed only three innings to score a mercy-rule victory over the visiting Lady Tigers on Wednesday.

Socastee’s Kibibi Thorsen pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings and drove in four runs to lead the Lady Braves to a 10-run first inning. Rebekah Oakley went 2-for-2 with two RBIs.

The Lady Braves face first-place St. James on Friday with the region title on the line.
