Softball: Timely hits lift NMB to victory in tourney opener

nmbsoft-infielder (2)The North Myrtle Beach High softball team put together three consecutive hits in the fifth inning to break open a tie game and claim a 4-2 victory over Obion (TN) in the Grand Strand Softbll Classic on Monday.

Featuring teams from all over the Southeast and East Coast, the GSSC saw several local teams use their spring break to stay sharp on the diamond. The Lady Chiefs (13-1), who lead Region 7-3A, once again got a stellar outing from junior pitcher Taylor Hansis to get the victory.

Hansis scattered four hits over seven innings and helped her own cause with an RBI single. But it was the critical fifth that made the difference as Makala Gore, Julia Cole and Rayni Newman delivered back-to-back-to-back hits to break open the knotted score. Gore went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored nd Newman was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

* Bristol (PA) 6, Myrtle Beach 5: The Lady Seahawks suffered a tough loss in the opening round of the Grand Strand Softball Classic on Monday.

Myrtle Beach jumped out to ta 4-0 lead but it wasn’t enough as Bristol scored two runs in the fourth, three in the fifth and one in the sixth that proved to be the game-winner.

Myrtle Beach’s top hitters were Keocia Walker (2-for-4 with two runs scored), Emmalee Ballard (2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBIs, McKenzie Coble (2-for-3 with two runs scored), and Deiica Burgess (2-for-3).

* Conway 21, Frewsburg (NY) 0: The Lady Tigers (9-7) dominated a shortened contest with Frewsburg, NY on Monday in the Grand Strand Softball Classic being played at the Market Commons. The game was called after four innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.

Conway’s Neci Hemingway (7-4) got the win and delivered two singles, a triple, two walks and four runs scored. Conway’s Kady Edwards (2-for-2 with five runs scored).

Others collecting hits for the Lady Tigers were Breanna Van Deusen (1-for-2, three runs scored) and Ashlyn Hardwick (2-for-4, three runs scored). Frewsburg managed just two hits off Hemingway and Mitchell. Conway will resume play on Tuesday.
