Softball: Sharks, Panthers rally in sixth for victories

sjsoft-swingThe St. James High softball team didn’t need to win Tuesday’s region showdown with visiting Wilson. But the Lady Sharks did it anyway, rallying in the sixth inning to score a 9-8 victory over the Lady Tigers and remain undefeated in Region 7-4A play.

Trailing 8-5 entering the bottom of the sixth, St. James responded with four runs in the frame to pull ahead. Starting pitcher Brooks Spiva was lifted earlier in the sixth for younger sister Natalie Spiva, who picked up the win in 1 1/3 scoreless innings.

St. James was outhit 13-12 but got big ones from Dominique Goss (2-for-3, four RBIs, run scored), Alysa Ayala (2-for-4, two RBIs), Kenly Dawes (2-for-3, three runs scored), and Sydney Cook (2-for-2, run scored). Skye Bailey added a solo homer.

* Carolina Forest 8, Conway 7: The Lady Panthers celebrated Senior Night with a dramatic victory over rival and Region 6-5A champion Conway by rallying from behind in the sixth inning.

Trailing 7-5 in the bottom of sixth, the Lady Panthers scored three runs to take the lead and pitcher Catie McGovern was able to hold on to it with a three-up/three-down seventh that capped a complete game victory.

Carolina Forest’s top hitters were Katie Endres (4-for-4, two RBIs) and Emma Liles (3-for-4, three RBIs).

The Lady Panthers travel to North Myrtle Beach on Thursday.

* Myrtle Beach 16, Marlboro County 7: The Lady Seahawks continued their hot hitting by blowing out the Lady Bulldogs.

Leading the way for the Lady Seahawks at the plate was Leah Belack (3-for-5, two doubles, triple). McKenzie Coble, Madison Needle and Carly Grace Bodge each had three hits and scored two runs apiece. Bodge also picked up the win on the mound.

The Lady Seahawks return to action Wednesday against North Myrtle Beach for a key region showdown.
