Softball: Sharks, Seahawks rally late to top county foes

mbsoft-gtslideThe St. James High softball team rallied late to claim an 8-6 comeback victory over rival Socastee in its season opener at Finway Park on Tuesday.

Trailing 6-2 entering the bottom of the fifth, the Lady Sharks scored two runs to cut the deficit in half, then they erupted for four runs in the bottom of the sixth to take their first lead of the game.

St. James starter Brooks Spiva nailed down the complete-game win by shutting out Socastee in the top of the seventh. The Lady Sharks got big games at the plate from Skye Bailey (3-for-4, 2 RBI, HR, 3 runs scored), Kelsey Gollie (2-for-4, 2 RBIs).

Socastee outhit St. James by a 14-8 margin, but the 4-1 difference in errors proved costly for starter Hailey LeDuc. Seven of her runs allowed were unearned, and she went 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs and a home run. Madison Myers (3-for-4, 1 RBI), Keays Presley (3-for-4), Abby Duggan (2-for-4, 3RBIs, 3 runs scored) also had big games for the Lady Braves (0-2).

* Myrtle Beach 14, Loris 6: The Lady Seahawks scored in double digits for the second straight day to improve to 2-0 with a win over the visiting Lady Lions.

Myrtle Beach’s Carly Grace Bodge pitched another complete game and Mckenzie Coble hit a [air of three-run homers to cap a 3-for-4 night with 7 RBIs. Lindsey Coble went 2-for-3 and scored 3 runs, and Cayce Roberts went 4-for-5. Both Madison Needle and Rylie Troxell went 3-for-4.

Despite the lopsided final score, the game was tied at 6-all in the bottom of the fifth when Myrtle Beach scored one run to take the lead. The Lady Seahawks closed the game out with 7 runs in the sixth inning.

The Lady Seahawks return to action Thursday when they travel to Conway.
