Running store opens in MB, Grand Opening on Saturday

Do what you love, love what you do. We’ve all heard that phrase and wished it was just that easy. For Daniel Brass, it is.

Brass’s passion is running, that’s obvious the moment you meet him. He’s got a runners body, and he’s appropriately attired. But, when he starts talking to you about running, you really get the sense that this guy is passionate about his sport. He’s able to tell you about upcoming runs in the area, training techniques, trends in equipment, and simply blow your mind with all the logic and precision that goes into fitting you in that perfect running shoe. It’s all a package that has worked well for Brass over the past few years, and one that he hopes will prove successful in Myrtle Beach as well.

After running an established and high volume running store in Richmond Virginia, Brass and his wife Heather decided that it was time to take their passion to a new level, and open their own store. While researching several areas of the country, they added Myrtle Beach as a possibility after running a couple of races here, including the July 4th 5K and the Myrtle Beach Mini, or half marathon in October. Meeting a few people and getting a good vibe from the area, they realized that Myrtle Beach might be the perfect fit for their new store. “Myrtle Beach was on the top of our list, and after realizing that the market was undeserved, we thought we saw a great opportunity. My wife and I both love the beach and this just seemed right for us” said Brass.

That great opportunity will culminate with this Saturday’s Grand Opening of Black Dog Running Company inside the Sports Corner on Hwy 501 in Myrtle Beach.  Described as the Grand Strands first and only running specialty store, Black Dog is as much about offering you the best equipment as it is about customer service to go along with that equipment. “One of the features we offer is specialized fitting. That starts with listening to the customer, then watching the customer walk and run, discussing their needs and goals, and matching them to the right shoe. Equipment can either help you or hurt you, with the right gear preventing injuries and helping you to achieve your goals faster,” said Brass.

In addition to specialized fittings with shoes, Black Dog Running Company also offers apparel and accessories to enhance the running experience. “The second most important thing is your socks. There are so many new technologies in running socks, especially with synthetics,” said Brass. “One of the new trends in running is compression material, which aids in recovery and increases blood flow. The right equipment keeps you running and injury free.”

This Saturday’s Grand Opening will be held at the store on Hwy 501 in Myrtle Beach, inside the Sports Corner. There will be a group run at 9:30am followed by special discounts throughout all stores inside the Sports Corner. In addition, raffles and giveaways will be held, with the raffles benefiting the Red Cross Rescue Runners, who will be on hand. No grand opening would be complete without a cookout, and there will be folks manning the grill as well. Expect to see the stores namesake hanging out behind the counter at the store on Saturday. Guinness would be the black dog mentioned in the name Black Dog Running Company.

“Running is our passion, it’s a way of life for us.” said Brass, “We want to encourage people to get out and run, the roads are always open, so people always have access to them.” He continued with “I see running in this area growing exponentially, and we want to do our part to help with that. We’ll be offering weekly group runs, and really getting out in the community to support and encourage people to get out and move.”

Do what you love, love what you do. With Black Dog Running Company, Daniel Brass seems to have found the perfect combination to the age old formula for success.
