Norcross dethrones Spring Valley for tournament title

Norcross (Ga.) dethroned Spring Valley as Crescent Bank Holiday Invitational champion in Thursday’s title game, defeating the defending champion 54-53 in a hard-fought contest fit for the crown.

Norcross erased a double-digit halftime deficit, thanks in large part by tournament MVP Diamond DeShields’ game-high 27 points.

Spring Valley (9-1), ranked No. 4 nationally by ESPN Rise, built a 32-21 lead at the half and appeared to be well on its way to a second straight title in the prestigious high school girls basketball tournament.

Spring Valley was led by Asia Dozier with 17 points. Xylina McDaniel added 16 points and Shaquita Walker contributed 12 points and seven boards.

* Archbishop Carroll (Pa.) 58, Stephenson 45: Archbishop Carroll bounced back from a heart-breaking loss in the semifinals to capture third place in the 13th Annual Crescent Bank Holiday Invitational.

Archbishop Carroll’s Sarah Curran led a balanced attack with 16 points. Rachel Pearson added 15 points while Meghan Creighton added 14 points and seven rebounds. Teammate Shayla Cooper added 10 points and nine rebounds, but DeShields put on a one-woman show in the final.

* Dutch Fork 53, Atlantic (Fla.):  scored a 53-28 win over Atlantic (Fla.) to earn fifth place in the 13th Annual Crescent Bank Holiday Invitational on Thursday at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center.

Dutch Fork (9-1) dominated the paint with a 36-14 advantage on points in the paint and a 20-2 advantage on second chance points. Leading the way for the Foxes was Alaina Coates with 24 points and 16 rebounds.

Ronni Williams paced Atlantic (9-3) with 13 points and six rebounds before fouling out late in the contest.

* Providence Day (N.C.) 50, Fayette County (N.C.): Providence Day captured the consolation bracket championship at the 13th Annual Crescent Bank Holiday Invitational with a 50-36 victory over Fayette County.

Providence Day (9-1) trailed only once in the contest and that was on the first basket of the game by Aneesa Watson.  The Chargers went on to lead by as many as 17 points in taking home the win.

Fayette County (7-4) connected on just 26% from the field and committed 19 turnovers in the game.

Jatarie White commanded the middle for Providence Day with 23 points, 12 rebounds and eight blocked shots.  Her eight blocks put her one behind the CBHI single game record.  Tiffany Mitchell added 15 points for the Chargers.

Fayett County was led by Aneesa Watson’s 11 points.

Those games led up to the third-place game between Archbishop Carroll (Pa.) vs Stephenson (Ga.) at noon Thursday and the 2:15 p.m. championship game between Spring Valley and Norcross (Ga.).
