Soccer: Lady Sharks down Swansea; MB falls in semis

sjgsoc-9The St. James High girls soccer team picked the right night to play its best defensive game of the season.

The second-seeded Lady Sharks advanced to the Lower State Final by scoring a hard-fought 1-0 victory over top-seeded Swansea, claiming the victory in sudden death on penalty kicks.

With St. James defender Mackenzie May shutting down Swansea’s top scorer and fellow defenders Nicole Meyers, Mary Ropp and Hannah Grace Schueuch holding the Lady Tigers in check, the two teams battled to a scoreless tie through 80 minutes of regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods and two 5-minute double overtime periods.

St. James goalkeeper Shannon Johnson, who blocked a PK and a rebound as well as several big saves earlier in the match, delivered in the clutch. She stopped three Swansea PKs in sudden death.

St. James’ Julia Carriker connected on the game-winner on the last kick of the night, sending the Lady Sharks to the Lower State Finals. They will travel to face Hilton Head, which eliminated Myrtle Beach in Friday’s other semifinal, on Monday.

* Hilton Head 5, Myrtle Beach 0: The Lady Seahawks’ season came to an end in unlikely fashion in Friday night’s Class 3A Lower State semifinals at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium.

Riding an eight-game shutout streak entering the contest, the Lady Seahawks (17-2) gave up a pair of goals in the first five minutes of play before falling 5-0 to visiting Hilton Head.

It had been nearly 700 minutes since the Lady Seahawks had allowed a goal, but it took Hilton Head just 2 minutes to connect on a shot past goalkeeper Gabby Moore. Perhaps still reeling from the quick strike, Myrtle Beach got caught off guard on a fast break and Hilton Head claimed a 2-0 edge just 5 minutes in to the match.

The Lady Seahawks never fully recovered from the 1-2 punch. Hilton Head went on to a 4-0 halftime advantage and struck again midway through the second half to put the game on ice.

Hilton Head advances to face St. James and Swansea in the Lower State Final on Monday.

* Socastee 5, Airport 0: The Braves (14-8-1) advanced to the Lower State semifinals with an impressive shutout victory over visiting Airport.

Leading 2-0, Socastee’s Willem Morin netted a penalty kick and Blade Lewis capitalized on a beautiful header to put the game away.

Socastee advances to face host Brookland-Cayce on Saturday.
