St. James edges Socastee; MB wins at Crescent Bank

Neighboring Grand Strand schools Socastee and St. James meet at least twice a season on the basketball court in key region rivalry games.

This season will be a best-of-three affair.

The Lady Sharks (7-2) scored a 40-34 win over the Lady Braves in Wednesday’s consolation bracket game of the Crescent Bank Holiday Invitational.

With the game tied at 33-33 with 3:26 to play, Stephanie Roberts gave St. James the lead for good on a layup with 2:53 on the clock. The Lady Braves were unable to retake the lead and suffered a loss to their top rivals.

Although the game is considered a non-region contest, the two schools will be able to use it for bragging rights if they were to split their regular-season meetings.

Roberts led the Lady Sharks by recording a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.  Socastee (7-5) was paced by Blake Smith’s 10 points and nine boards.

* Myrtle Beach 54, Goose Creek 52: Finally, score one for the local teams in the Crescent Bank Holiday Invitational.

After three rounds and three Grand Strand teams went winless against the top-notch girls high school basketball field, the Myrtle Beach scored the first local victory Wednesday with a 54-52 win over Goose Creek.

Myrtle Beach’s Khadijah Sessions scored a game-high 35 points In a back-and-forth affair that featured 11 ties and seven lead changes. The Seahawks (7-2) never led by more than the final margin of two points.

Sessions connected on a pair of free throws with 4 seconds remaining on the clock to break the 52-all tie. Goose Creek’s Jalvin Jones had a wide-open look at a 3-pointer at the buzzer but it fell sort of the rim.

Sessions, who connected on 12-of-17 from the field and 8-of-10 from the free throw line, added seven rebounds and four assists to lift the two-time defending Class AAA state champions to their lone win in the tourney. Tanisha Brown pulled down 11 rebounds for Myrtle Beach.

Goose Creek was paced by N’Dea Bryant’s 16 points and seven boards.
