St. James edges Socastee via PKs to claim Nash title

sjsoc-11If this weekend’s Michael Nash Memorial Soccer Tournament is any indication of what the regular season holds, look for an exciting spring for Grand Strand high school squads on the local soccer pitches.

The St. James High boys capped an impressive tournament with an even more impressive comeback to defeat rival Socastee 5-4 in Sunday’s championship game at the North Myrtle Beach Park & Sports Complex.

The Sharks twice erased deficits to force extra time before capturing the match and the tournament title via penalty kicks. The two teams went undefeated in the preseason tournament to meet in the final.

Socastee appeared to take control of the game early in the second half when the Braves claimed a 3-1 lead, but the Sharks battled back for a pair of goals to tie it up and force extra time. Socastee again went ahead with an overtime goal, but St. James answered quickly to level it at 4-all and send it into PKs.

The boys title match topped a similarly exciting girls championship game that saw state power Dreher score a 3-2 victory over Bluffton. Although no local teams made the final, Socastee, Myrtle Beach, North Myrtle Beach, Conway and Christian Academy of Myrtle Beach showed signs of strong seasons ahead.

The SCHSL soccer regular season officially kicks off Monday.
