Sharks sweep Seahawks to remain unbeaten in region

The St. James boys and girls basketball teams remained undefeated in region play Tuesday night by beating Myrtle Beach in the Shark Tank.

The Lady Sharks (14-3 overall, 3-0 Region VIII-AAA) made some history with their 49-43 victory over the two-time defending state champion and six-time reigning region champion Lady Seahawks (14-3, 2-1).

Myrtle Beach suffered its first region loss since 2006 against St. James, which was expected to compete with the Lady Seahawks for the title this season. The Lady Sharks took over first place with the victory.

With Myrtle Beach playing without Tanisha Brown, who is out with a knee injury, co-star Khadijah Sessions was left to carry the load for the Lady Seahawks. She scored a game-high 27 but couldn’t overcome St. James’ numbers advantage.

St. James got a team-high 15 points from Keyauna Rutledge and teammates Stephanie Roberts and Charisma Rodriguez added 11 apiece, but it was team defense that helped the Lady Sharks prevail. Myrtle Beach was guilty of 21 turnovers.

The St. James boys also did it with defense to pull out a dramatic 55-54 win over the Seahawks to remain on top of the Region VIII-AAA standings. Nolan Butler scored a layup with under 30 seconds left to make score 54-53 in favor of Myrtle Beach, Caleb Duggan hit the game-winning  basket with 6 seconds left to  give the Sharks the lead for good.

Duggan scored a game-high 27 points and JC Cavin added 11 to lead the Sharks (8-6, 3-0), while Tramond Wilson led the Seahawks (7-10, 1-2) with 18 points.

Both schools return to action Friday to face archrivals as Myrtle Beach takes on North Myrtle Beach and St. James plays Socastee.
