Stinnett pitches Pelicans past Dash in homecoming

pel-StinnettJake Stinnett went seven innings of one-run baseball and the Myrtle Beach Pelicans rallied for a five-run bottom of the seventh to beat the Winston-Salem Dash 5-1 in Monday’s home series opener at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark.

With Winston-Salem (52-69, 24-27) leading 1-0 in the bottom of the seventh, Bryant Flete and Ian Rice both singled to center to put runners at first and second with nobody out. The next batter was Jeffrey Baez, who bunted a ball to the third base side of the mound. Dash starter Thad Lowry (8-8) fielded and threw wildly to first, allowing both runners to come around and score. Baez went all the way to third on the play, giving the Pelicans a 2-1 lead.

Jesse Hodges then walked, knocking Lowry out of the game. After Erick Castillo bounced into a fielder’s choice, Daniel Spingola walked to load the bases. Two batters later, David Bote flared a double to right to score two runs, with another Winston error later on the same play plating a third, making it 5-1.

Tommy Thorpe worked the final two innings for Myrtle Beach (68-53, 32-19) without allowing a run, sealing the Birds 19th win in the last 24 games.

Stinnett (9-4) allowed just one run on five hits over seven innings. He struck out six against only one walk.

With the game scoreless in the top of the third, Stinnett allowed three straight two-out singles to allow Winston-Salem to take a 1-0 lead. The final one came from Mason Robbins, who had three hits on the night.

The Pelicans and Dash will meet again Tuesday beginning at 7:05 p.m.
