MB retakes top spot in poll; storm scrambles schedule

mbhoops-12sjThe Myrtle Beach Seahawks reclaimed the top spot in the Coastal Basketball Coaches Association poll this week after knocking off Noth Myrtle Beach for first place in Region 7-3A.

The Seahawks (11-5 overall, 4-0 region) had been ranked No. 1 in the CBCA poll since the start of the season until the Chiefs (14-4, 3-1) leapfrogged them last week. Myrtle Beach settled the issue on its home court with a 65-50 victory last Friday.

Myrtle Beach, ranked No. 4 in the state’s Class 3A poll, jumped back ahead of NMB, which No. 2 in the CBCA poll and No. 8 in the state. Solomon Cooper once again represented the Seahawks on the weekly “Fabulous Five” list by averaging 18 points and eight rebounds per game.

Socastee (11-4, 3-1) retook No. 3 in the local poll after a solid 2-0 week. The Braves were led by Fab 5 regular Koel Cutler, who averaged 18 points per game.

No. 4 Carolina Forest (8-9, 2-2) remained ahead of No. 5 Conway (7-9, 1-2) despite the Tigers’ controversial 83-81 win over the Panthers last Friday. Conway’s Christian Jeffords made his Fab 5 debut by averaging 21 points per game.

The biggest mover in the poll was No. 6 Christian Academy, which climbed two spots after winning two of its three road games last week.

No. 7 Georgetown (8-9, 0-4), Carvers Bay (5-13, 2-3), Waccamaw (7-7, 1-2) and Loris (6-8, 1-3) round out the top 10.

St. James fell out of the top 10 following a winless week but Dakota Holmes made the Fab 5 after averaging 18 points per game for the Sharks.

The closing of Horry County Schools on Tuesday and Wednesday created a scramble to reschedule Tuesday’s region schedule:

Conway’s trip to South Florence for a Region 6-4A showdown has been moved to 4 p.m. Saturday.

Region 7-3A members have chosen Wednesday, Feb. 5, to make up Tuesday’s ice-out. Socastee is at North Myrtle Beach and Myrtle Beach travels to Georgetown for make-up games. The Seahawks also will host Carolina Forest on Saturday night.

Thursday’s region wrestling tournament at Socastee is still planned to go on as scheduled.
