Surfrider Event Expands

October on the Grand Strand means a cool down from the summer insanity.  Non-surfers would think the local surfer community disappears after hurricane season and the summer sun fades.  For the past 12 years many local surfers and ocean-minded others have made themselves part of something much bigger than the local waves.

The Lip-Rippin’ Chilympics Chili Cookoff is the Surfrider Foundation Grand Strand Chapter’s (http://surfridergrandstrand.org/) annual fundraiser.  The event has moved three times in as many years because it keeps growing.  Many may remember it on the lawn at Murrells Inlet’s Hot Fish Club when less parking was required. These days it requires multiple venues and multiple parking lots.

The chili competitors, local environmental non-profits, businesses, and artists are linked together along the pier adjacent to the Crazy Sister Marina in Murrells Inlet.. There are several bands playing music throughout the day headlined by the local phenoms Ten Toes Up. Each chili can be sampled for a $1 donation per chili. There are cash prizes for chili competitors as well as plenty of raffles for attendees.

This year, beyond the normal categorical winners; including People’s Choice chili, Best Theme chili, and more is an Iron Spoon Challenge. Five previous winners are invited to prepare a chili with a secret meat that will be disclosed on the morning of the competition. New South Brewery will have local brewed beers available. South Strand Helping Hands is also requesting non-persishable, or canned food to support their local efforts.

The event is a family-friendly atmosphere featuring a kids’ area with inflatables and face painting.

Open to the public from Noon to 6pm Sunday October 16, 2011. Although the festivities take place at Spuds Waterfront Dining and the Crazy Sister Marina it borders the Murrells Inlet Marshwalk. There is now scheduled an afterparty at Uncle Tito’s, across business 17 next door to the parking lot.

All proceeds from the Lip-Rippin’ Chilympics Chili Cookoff will be used for projects of the Grand Strand Surfrider Foundation, an all-volunteer, 501c3 non-profit serving the Grand Strand since 1998. All donations are tax-deductable.

Steven Pierce runs the popular local surf website http://surfsidesurfs.com, and has been active in the surf community for almost 20 years.
