Tennis: Seahawks, Saints stay perfect with sweeps

cambgtennis-joelThe Myrtle Beach High girls tennis team is off to a smooth start to its Class 3A state title defense, sweeping past a pair of opponents this week – and for the better part of the season.

The Lady Seahawks swept their sixth straight opponent Tuesday in a 6-0 win over visiting St. James to improve to 7-0 on the season and 2-0 in the region. On Monday they claimed a 6-0 victory over visiting Conway.

Myrtle Beach won both of this week’s matches in straight sets. No. 1 singles Elizabeth Truluck, No. 2 Emma Springs, No. 3 Bailey Deskins, No. 4 Paxton Gentry and No. 5 Sarah Woodard won their matches, as did the No. 2 doubles team of Catherine Truluck and Cayce Roberts.

Myrtle Beach has only lost one individual match all season – three-set tiebreaker in No. 1 singles during a 6-1 win over Socastee – and that was before true No. 1 Elizabeth Truluck returned to the team.

* Christian Academy 9, Marlboro County 0: The Lady Saints (7-0 overall, 4-0 region) remained undefeated on the season and in the match by sweeping Marlboro County.

No. 1 singles Tatianna Harrelson, No. 2 Chloe Parker, No. 3 Sam Fanning, No. 4 Ashley Bass and No. 5 Greer Houghton won their matches in straight sets, and No. 1 doubles partners Harrelson and Bass, No. 2 Parker and Grace Houghton, and No. 3 Fanning and Greer Houghton dominated their pro-sets.

* Carolina Forest 7, South Florence 0: The Lady Panthers (4-4, 2-1) dropped only five games in 12 sets that resulted in a sweep of the Lady Bruins.

No. 1 singles Eva Vandoros, No. 2 Joslyn McCray, No. 3 Jaden Nye, No. 4 Sophia Gouhin and No. 5 Brittany Morgan secured wins while the No. 1 doubles team of Vandoros and McCray, and No. 2 doubles Evonne Sherman and Sarah Nibar teamed up for victories.

* Socastee 5, Conway 2: The Lady Braves remained undefeated in region play thanks to singles wins from Anna Brice Cox, Kristian Case, Nicole Mortel, and the No. 2 doubles team of Marie Bennedetti and Hannah Beam, and No. 1 doubles Cox and Joy Renfrow. The Lady Braves face Carolina Forest on Thursday.
