Texas A&M ends Coastal’s season in blowout fashion

ccubase-catchCoastal Carolina’s 14th trip to the NCAA postseason ended Sunday afternoon with an 8-1 loss to top seed and sixth-ranked Texas A&M (47-12) at the NCAA College Station Regional at Blue Bell Park.

The Chanticleers, seeded second at the Regional and ranked 25th, end the season with a 39-21 record and were nationally ranked in each of the last nine weeks of the season.

The Aggies jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first. Ryne Birk hit a one-out double and scored on an RBI single by Logan Taylor. Nick Banks followed with an RBI double off the left-center field wall.

Banks later gave Texas A&M a 3-0 lead with a leadoff home run to start the home half of the fourth.

The Aggies used the long ball again in the sixth to take a 5-0 lead. Banks hit a leadoff single and, two batters later, Logan Nottebrok hit a two-run home run to left field.

Texas A&M padded its lead with two runs in the eighth for an 8-0 lead. Pinch hitter Blake Kopetsky hit a leadoff triple and scored on an RBI single by Michael Barash. Blake Allemand and Birk followed with consecutive singles, the latter driving in Barash.

Coastal avoided the shutout in the ninth. G.K. Young and Zach Remillard each drew walks to start the inning. Pinch hitter Kevin Woodall, Jr., loaded the bases with a single. Pinch runner Billy Curtis scored CCU’s lone run when David Parrett reached on an RBI fielder’s choice.

Aggie starting pitcher Andrew Vinson (5-2) earned the win. He scattered five hits over 7.2 scoreless innings with three walks and eight strikeouts. The 2015 Big South Pitcher of the Year Bobby Holmes (4-1) suffered the loss. After getting the save the previous day versus Texas Southern, Holmes returned to the mound to start Sunday versus A&M. He allowed eight hits and five runs in 5.2 innings with no walks and four strikeouts.

Anthony Marks led CCU’s offense with two hits. Both hits were infield singles to give him 30 on the season and Coastal had 87 as a team this season. Zach Remillard reached base three times Sunday thanks to a pair of walks and a single. Tyler Chadwick broke up Vinson’s no-hit bid with a leadoff double in the fifth. Zach Remillard
